In a recent match at the Aviva Stadium, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice scored the opening goal for England with a precise strike into the top right corner in the 11th minute. However, despite the significance of the goal, Rice chose not to celebrate, instead raising his hands in acknowledgment of the Irish fans.
This decision carried extra weight, as Rice had represented the Republic of Ireland in three matches before switching his international allegiance to England in 2018. Some fans questioned Rice’s subdued reaction, especially when compared to Jack Grealish, another former Ireland U21 player, who did celebrate after netting England’s second goal. However, Rice later provided insight into his decision, along with his reason for declining the England captaincy when Harry Kane was substituted in the 84th minute.
Speaking to *beIN Sports*, Rice explained that while scoring was a great feeling, celebrating would have felt inappropriate given his Irish background. He noted his strong family ties to Ireland, particularly his late grandparents, and felt that celebrating would be disrespectful. His father, who was present in the stands, also influenced his decision to remain composed.
Rice emphasized that while the goal was important, his focus remained on helping his team succeed, and he viewed the experience positively overall. Despite his restraint, Rice's respect for his Irish heritage was clear.
Jack Grealish, who also has Irish roots, expressed similar sentiments in his post-match interview with *ITV Sport*. Grealish, who celebrated his goal, stated that he holds no ill will toward Ireland and fondly remembers his time playing for the country. He added that his switch to England carried no bitterness and that missing out on Euro 2024 selections only fueled his determination.
Both Rice and Grealish highlighted the complexities of their ties to Ireland while playing for England, expressing deep respect for their heritage and acknowledging the emotions that come with representing their current national team.
