Before Kylian Mbappe's highly anticipated transfer to Real Madrid, reports suggest the French forward had previously agreed to join a Premier League team.
After months of speculation, Mbappe confirmed his move to Real Madrid following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Expressing his joy, he posted on social media, saying, "No one can understand how thrilled I am right now. I can't wait to join you, Madridistas. Thank you for your incredible support. Hala Madrid!"
However, a report from L'Equipe claims that in 2022, Mbappe had reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool. The Merseyside club allegedly made a €200 million offer for the star forward, with Mbappe agreeing to the move on the condition that he could eventually transfer to Madrid. However, the deal reportedly fell through when Liverpool was asked to raise their bid.
A source close to Paris Saint-Germain has denied the claim, stating that Liverpool lacked the financial resources to sign Mbappe.
In a 2020 interview, Mbappe praised Liverpool, calling them a "machine" in the Premier League, acknowledging their dominant performances. Liverpool's former manager, Jürgen Klopp, also addressed the club's financial limitations, saying that if Liverpool had unlimited funds, players like Mbappe, Haaland, and Bellingham would have joined.
Ian Graham, the former director of research at Liverpool, echoed similar sentiments last year, telling The Guardian that while Mbappe is statistically the best player in Europe, his price tag places him beyond the club’s financial reach.
