| Rodrygo Responds to Ballon d’Or Exclusion: “I Feel I Earned It” |
Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward, Rodrygo, has voiced his disappointment after being omitted from the 30-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, despite a standout season. The 23-year-old contributed significantly to his team's success, scoring 17 goals and delivering nine assists in 51 appearances. He believes his adaptability on the field might have impacted the decision.
In an interview with ESPN, Rodrygo shared, "I was disappointed. I feel like I earned a spot. I’m not taking anything away from those who made the list—they deserve it—but I believe I should have been there too. It caught me off guard, but it’s not my decision to make."
Known for his versatility, Rodrygo often steps in wherever Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti needs him. Although he primarily plays as a right winger, he's also been used on the left, as a central striker, or as a second forward.
“I’m frequently placed where the team needs me," Rodrygo said. "If there’s a gap on the right, I fill it. If a striker is needed, I’m called. Maybe it’s limiting my recognition, but I prioritize the team."
Despite some of his teammates, including Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and the recently retired Toni Kroos, being named on the Ballon d'Or list, Rodrygo remains committed to helping his team. Individual awards, for now, take a back seat to his goal of contributing to Real Madrid and Brazil’s success.
The Ballon d'Or winner will be announced in Paris on October 28, but Rodrygo is focused on continuing to showcase his talent on the field.
